Don’t dread the conversation. Master it.

One of the hardest things I have to do as a manager is address under-performing. It is a loaded conversation and, often, it derails the relationship. Here are three tips for a successful, non-conflictual meeting.


1. Choose the right time – observe your internal state, let everything sit with you for a while, go in with an inquiring mind, not a judging one.


2. Stay factual – talk about what happened, not about what you think happened.


3. “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” Steven Covey – listen actively, be present, take notes, pause to think. It will be worth it.
